Official Competition Rules
  1. All writers of submitted scripts must be 18 years of age or older at the time of contest entry.
  2. No entrant may have earned more than $25,000 (in cash or other consideration) for writing services for theatrical films or television, or for the sale of, or sale of an option to, any original story, treatment, screenplay, or teleplay in the three years prior to contest entry.  Furthermore writers must not have won a fellowship or writing contest that includes a “first look” clause in the three years prior to the opening date of the contest.
  3. The rights to the submitted screenplay cannot have been previously optioned or sold.
  4. Screenplay submissions must be the original work of the applicant and may not be based, in whole or in part, on any other fictional or non-fictional material, published or unpublished, produced or unproduced for which the writer does not have rights.  There must be no dispute about the ownership of submitted screenplays or the writers’ right to submit screenplay.
  5. Entries may be adapted from the entrant's original work, works in the public domain, and from works to which the author owns all film rights—this should be noted in the submission email. If the script is based on a true story, historical or contemporary, that should also be noted in the submission email.
  6. It is the sole responsibility of the entrant/entrants to register the submitted screenplay with the U.S. Copyright Office and/or with the Writer’s Guild of America.
  7. Competition judges, readers and employees of the Writer’s Advantage Contest Series, past and present, and their immediate families, are not eligible to enter.
  8. Payment and entries may be submitted online only.  Submission instructions available at http://www.writersadvantagecontest.com/submit.html must be completed in their entirety for valid contest entry.
  9.  To simulate the process used by producers, the first round of judging evaluates logline and/or synopsis only.  Final rounds will judge the script in its entirety.
  10. Logline and synopsis should be included in a separate file from screenplay submission.
  11. A standard title page must be included as the first page of the screenplay, listing the title of your script, name of author(s), mailing address, telephone number, and email address. This is does NOT affect the judging process.
  12. All submitted screenplays must be written in the English language, between 80 and 130 pages, in Courier or Courier New font, and in the U.S. Motion Picture industry standard format.
  13. All entry files must be submitted in PDF format only.
  14. Under no circumstances will substitutions of corrected pages or new drafts of submitted screenplays be accepted.
  15. NO REFUNDS FOR FAILURE TO ADHERE TO RULES.  Failure to adhere to the contest guidelines will result in disqualification and forfeiture of entry fee.  Entry fees will not be returned or adjusted for any reason.
  16. The decisions of the Judges will be final.
  17. The official prize list is as stated in the web page http://www.writersadvantageshowcase.com/index.html.  No other listing of prizes is the official list.  This prize list is subject to revision until the official ending date of the contest.
  18. Collaborative work is accepted, but only one prize will be given and it will be the writers’ responsibility to distribute the prize. If writers of a script are unable to agree on the distribution of a prize, their script will be disqualified. Also, only one partner’s contact information should be submitted with script and payment.
  19. All winners, as independent contractors, will be responsible for paying their own income tax, or other applicable taxes, fees, or penalties associated with the winning of contest prizes whther national, state, local, or otherwise. Writer's Advantage Contest Series shall not be responsible for any withholdings.
  20. This list is the only official list of Writer’s Advantage Contest Series rules and regulations.  Any other listing of rules is void to the extent that it differs from this copy.  This official list may change without notice, and at the sole discretion of the Writer’s Advantage Contest Series.
